Keene Competes at IODA North American Championships - Places 2nd in Team Racing and 15th in Fleet Racing

During the USODA Team Trials, Mason Keene qualified to compete at the IODA North American Championship. The regatta was held in July of 2024. Below is his recap of his experiences:

The 2024 North American championship was an amazing experience. The venue was Club Nautico de San Juan which resided in the heart of San Juan Puerto Rico. It was located on a shipping channel where we were towed each day out to the Atlantic Ocean. Each day we had strong winds of 15-25 knots unless it was affected by storms or weather. It came offshore each day creating waves up to 8 feet at times. Everyday was very hot and sunny with very high humidity. We all had to learn to manage our hydration and sunscreen. Brayden Bricker named LBSS Student of the Year for 2023

The Lake Beulah Sailing School Student of the Year is presented to the LBSS student who in the eyes of the instructors demonstrated Leadership, Sportsmanship, Effort and Improvement, and Helping skills. This trophy is awarded by the Lake Beulah Sailing School on an annual basis.

This year’s recipient has shown a consistent enthusiasm for participating in all aspects of this year's curriculum. Despite hardships and challenging windy days, this student continued and never gave up. Our selection also spent considerable time helping other young sailors to build their confidence both on and off the water. Whether motivating his skipper to stay focused, or encouraging his younger brother to start crewing, our winner this year embraced a high level of sportsmanship unusual for his age. His love of competition is evident in both his sailing and “bags” playing. This student is very receptive to feedback and extremely coachable.

The 2023 LBSS Student of the Year was awarded to Brayden Brickler. He received the Glenn Wegener Memorial Trophy which is on display at the Lake Beulah Yacht Club..

Christian Connor is named 2022 LBSS Student of the Year

Leadership, Sportsmanship, Effort and Improvement, and Helping

Christian Connor was selected by his coaches as the 2022 LBSS Student of the Year for his demonstrated Leadership, Sportsmanship, Effort and Improvement, and Helping. This trophy is awarded annually to the top LBSS student. Connor skippers both an Optimist Dinghy and an X boat. He received the Glenn Wegener Memorial Trophy.

Chandler Jarecki named 2021 LBSS Student of the Year

This year's sailing school student of the year is a dedicated sailor who has put countless hours into improving their skills on and off the water. They are a welcoming presence to the other sailors and always come to class with genuine excitement to get on the water. This sailor takes correction extremely well and despite races where he didn’t sail as well as he wanted to, he consistently sought out feedback and actively applied it on the water. This sailor has established both a productive and fun relationship with his crew - this relationship is clear through his gracious spirit towards his crew and has set a great example to other sailors on the importance of a strong skipper/crew relationship. Above all, this sailor sees the joy in sailing and truly enjoys the sport, a testament to his natural aptitudes for hard work and optimism. It is evident to the instructors that this student is having fun in class while listening, improving, and engaging other sailors in the LBSS. The instructors are proud to say that this year's Sailing School Student of the Year is Chandler Jarecki.

Geneva's Sophie Niemann and Ivar Eiseman win 2021 LBSS Opti RWB & Green

Sophie Niemann bested fifty six RWB sailors during the 2021 LBSS Optimist Regatta. Due to light winds, only two races were completed of the four planned. Sophie’s finishes of 5 & 2 beat out Will Utz’ finishes of 7 & 1. to take home the crown. Utz won a tie breaker with Nissana Berman of Chicago Yacht Club for second place. Despite light winds, seven of the top eight finishers were Red Fleeters.

Thirty-eight Green Fleeters competed on a separate course. Three sailors, Eiseman, Alexander Prendergast of CYC, and Morgan Seaverson of LBSS, tied for first place with eleven points. Ivar won the tie breaker with the most race wins.

2020 LBSS Opti Results - Charlie Bruss Wins

A total of 47 RWB Fleet sailors arrived at the Lake Beulah Yacht Club to compete in the 28th annual LBSS Opti Regatta. The RWB Championship Fleet PRO, Kent Haeger, started the first Championship race promptly at 10 am with light winds. Pine’s John Lieber took the first race followed by 2019 champion Henry Ackley, also of Pine. A second race was also sailed in light air. Charlie Bruss followed a fifth place in the first race with a bullet in the second.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature brought moisture to the course after lunch. A thunderstorm cleared the lake of Opti’s and turned off the breeze. Without wind, the regatta ended with Bruss taking home the title with six points. He was followed by Ethan Bowman (9 points) of Oshkosh and Henry Ackley (10 points). For results, click here.

Roble/Shea win 49erFX spot on the 2020 U.S. Olympic Sailing Team

Former LBSS student and sailing instructor, Stephanie Roble teamed with Maggie Shea of Wilmette, IL to win the Bronze Medal at the 2020 49erFX World Championship and a spot on the 2020 U.S. Olympic Sailing Team. Following a short break, the team will train for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Updates may be found on their website.

Sydney Urben Awarded 2019 LBSS Student of the Year

Leadership, Sportsmanship, Effort and Improvement, and Helping
Sydney Urben was selected by her LBSS instructors as the 2019 recipient of the Glenn Wegener Memorial Trophy for her demonstrated Leadership, Sportsmanship, Effort and Improvement, and Helping. This trophy is awarded annually to the top LBSS student.

As presented by Anne Humphries, niece of Glenn Wegener, ”This student was a pleasure to teach all year long and always came ready to learn, making huge improvements throughout the year and exhibiting a refreshing competitive spirit and positive attitude in class. This spark really set the tone for the younger students.

This student came to X-boats with no prior Optimist experience, and during this first full year of steering an X-boat, engaged in a steep learning curve while continuously navigating in a competitive fleet. This student's work ethic also rubbed off on the crew, who matched the skipper's intensity and made huge gains this year. The coaches all agreed that this student was always receptive to any coaching and always willing to try something new if it was going to help improve the sailing results.  This is why the 2019 LBSS Student of the Year is Sydney Urben.”

2019 LBSS Optimist Championship

A total of eighty nine (89) RWB and Green Fleet sailors arrived at the Lake Beulah Yacht Club bright and early, many attending their very first regatta. The RWB Championship Fleet PRO, Kent Haeger, started the first Championship race promptly at 10 am with light winds. Unfortunately, Mother Nature brought moisture to the course at the halfway point. Beulah’s Ashley Muller patiently sailed navigated the conditions to a win in the first race. Following her finish, the winds dropped, but 45 of the 62 starters completed the race within the 20 minute time limit.

A two hour break enabled the sailors to wait out the lunch hour storms. Race 2 started at 1:30 under sunny skies and stronger breeze. Henry Ackley of Pine Lake outlasted John Lieber of PYC to take the race win. Lieber had finished 8th in the lighter winds of race 1, but found the strengthen breeze to his liking. He won the final race of the day. Ackley closed out the day with a fifth place, good enough to win the LBSS Championship. For the results, click here and click on the RWB tab.

In the Green Fleet, six races were completed. Teddy Bower of Lake Forest won three of the six races. Nick Berkowitz of PYC won two races while the final race was won by Liddy Lynch of Geneva. Twenty five sailors competed on the Green course. For Green Fleet results, click here .

Zettlemoyer Awarded 2018 LBSS Student of the Year

Brian Zettlemoyer was named 2018 LBSS Student of the Year by the coaches of the Lake Beulah Sailing School. Anne Humphrey awarded Brian the Glenn Wegener Memorial Trophy in recognition of his class leadership, sportsmanship, effort, helpfulness, and improvement. Congratulations Brian!

Schmidt/LeRoy win Quads!

B-7 wins!

Annie Cate Schmidt and Anneliese LeRoy

On July 5 & 6, LBYC hosted the Quad Lakes Regatta consisting of Beulah, Cedar, Nagawicka, Pine, Madison, & Oshkosh X sailors. Thirty six (36) boats competed in five races during the event.  Annie Cate Schmidt and Anneliese LeRoy sailed their B7 "Little Schmidt" to victory despite not winning a race.  Second place finishers A136, Abby Eckert & Alison Heimsch, won two races, but a 12th place finish in the fifth race extended Schmidt's margin of victory to nine points. Beulah had a strong fleet of eleven boats competing.

Jacob Zils outlasts Ashley Mueller to win 2018 LBSS Opti Championship

Gevena's Jacob Zils won the four race regatta by one point over Beulah's Ashley Mueller to take home the coveted Labanauskas Trophy. Fifty one boats competed in the Red White and Blue Championship Fleet with northeastern breezes at 7 to 15 mph.  The event was tightly contested at the top.  None of the top four finishers finished lower than fourth place in a race. Zils, Muller, Plummer (Geneva), and Ackley (Pine) each won a race.  The Championship came down to the final race with Zils finishing second and Mueller finishing one place back in third.  RWB Fleet winners were Zils - Red, Plummer - Blue, and Austin Steiner - White.

In the Green Fleet, thirty two sailors competed in what for most, was their first regatta experience. Jack Plummer of Geneva finished first, followed by Andrew Meinjtes of Madison, and Kai Suh-Pomierski of Geneva. Top finishers for the host club were Cameryn Neudorff, Hailey Greeson, and Christian Connor.

2017 LBSS Student of the Year - Ashley Mueller

"Tonight's recipient is an exemplary sailing student.  Her successful sailing year in the Opti was a direct result of her hard work and effort on the water.  Not only did she win a regatta, but she also had top 10 finishes at the ILYA Championship. As a student, she always showed up to class with a competitive mindset ready to improve her skills. She never complained and acted as a role model for the rest of the students. Her willingness to be a substitute crew in the X boat was a tremendous help to the instructors and allowed other sailors to progress.  Her manners, sportsmanship, and leadership skills were evident both on and off the sailboat. She has shown great commitment to the sport and is ready to take her skills to the next level. This student is truly deserving of this award. Simon wins 25th Annual LBSS Opti Regatta

Red Fleeters Meta Simon, Ellie Harned, and Anders Beckes took 1, 2, and 5 in the RWB Fleet.

Despite winds gusting over 20 mph, Pewaukee's Meta Simon outlasted Pine's Ellie Harned by two points to win the 25th annual LBSS Optimist Regatta.  With 44 sailors competing, the two Red Fleeters dominated the event with finishes of 1,2,2 and 5,1,1, respectively.  Pewaukee's Fritz Simon ran a close third, but was unable to outsail the ladies. He too sailed a very consistent regatta with 2,4,4 finishes.  Meta took home the Labanauskas Trophy as champion of the RWB Fleet.

In Green Fleet, only one race was completed due to the high winds and big waves.  Twenty four sailors participated with Matthew Sexton of Geneva takiing home the first prize. Kent Haeger was the PRO for RWB, Riley Schmodt was PRO for the Green Fleet, and Nancy Schmidt chaired the event.

The Lake Beulah Sailing School is pleased to announce our 25th Annual LBSS Optimist Dinghy Regatta to be held on Monday, June 26, 2017.  The venue will be Lake Beulah located in East Troy, Wisconsin. The regatta will be organized by the Lake Beulah Sailing School. Optimist Red, Blue and White Fleet assignments will be based on the competitor’s attained age on June 26 2017. The Opti fleets will be as follows: Red Fleet/Competitors aged 13-15; Blue Fleet/Competitors aged 11-12 years; White Fleet/Competitors aged 10 years and under.  Green Fleet racing will also be held for first year racers and novices.

KinderPram Hosts New Sailors!

Saturday morning was beautiful and warm and sunny and it seems the kids are alright! There was a spirited group for the rebirth of LBSS KinderPram and good times were had by all - Bricklers and Mullers and Greesons, OH MY! It's not too late to get your young'un involved!

2016 LBSS Greetings!

Greetings friends of the Lake Beulah Sailing School – spring has sprung and the docks and boats are going in and that means soon it’ll be summer and all the kids can go sailing! We are very excited for the 2016 season to get here, as we’ve got some great things in store, both old and new:

• Instructors will include some seasoned veterans and a couple of great new additions!
• We look forward to a great and spirited Green Fleet this year as many of the kids who fell in like with sailing over the last couple Learn-to-Sail (LTS) sessions fully commit to loving the sport and all the great friends and memories they’ll be making!
• We have two more weeks of LTS on the calendar and the spots are already filling up!
• We’ll be adding something new, a Saturday morning Kinderpram for the younger (4-5 year old) set that just can’t wait to get on the water (not yet on the official calendar, details to follow)!
• Another round of Adult Learn to Sail and the Beulah Opti regatta also in store!
• We’ll be having our final run with Trivia Night for the fundraiser and it’s scheduled for Saturday night July 2, please mark your calendar to join us and plan to bring your friends and family that are in town so that we can make our last Trivia Night a raging success!
